How to help your child excel during the time of Corona virus lock-down
As Corona virus outbreak closes schools and therapy centers (special education, OT, and speech therapy) across the country, many parents find the situation very disturbing and upsetting. They are are increasingly getting anxious about their children’s uncertain break from therapies as it may hamper their children’s learning. Making the condition even more distressing, children are advised not to even go to the park and playground as a preventive measures from the deadly Corona virus.
This is really a tough time for all of us but this shall pass too. I would ask all moms not to panic and utilize the time effectively with their kids. I always believe, with a little change in their approach, a mom can be the best therapist for a child.
Some simple tips for implementing an effective learning during this period.
1. Create a daily schedule and follow it with consistency. The schedule can include study, art, indoor games, occupational therapy sessions etc.
2. Being an educator, I would suggest to break the study time into three parts.
a) Revision of old lessons. I often hear from parents that kids forget the concept as it was being taught a long time ago and due to time constraints no practice was done on a regular basis. So, take out some time from schedule and make your kid practice the old lessons.
b) Make your kid practice the recently taught lesson. More practice means making them proficient in the topic.
c) Try out new concept with your kid. It might not be easy introducing new concept to him but not impossible either. It can be anything like identification of colours, identification of numbers and alphabets, clock, calendar, addition, subtraction, verb, noun etc. It can be even teaching indoor game skills like carom, ludo etc.
3. Just always remember an important point. Always encourage your child to respond verbally while studying and it really helps to develop communication skill in the child.
4. Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals for guidance. Talk to your child’s occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, behavioural therapist, and special educator for home plans.
All the best to moms. Have faith on yourself and keep trying. Trust me your attitude matters. Share the post and spread positivity.
